HOW TO VISIT A NEW DOJO

Seven steps, in order.

01
Identify candidates
Use the map to find 2–3 dojos within reasonable travel distance that match your style preference.
02
Contact ahead
Email or call to confirm the sensei is available on your intended visit day. Drop-ins are tolerated but discouraged in classical dojos.
03
Bring nothing
No gi. No belt. Watching from the side is the standard first visit. The dojo will tell you when to participate.
04
Arrive 15 minutes early
Greet the sensei before class begins. Bow on entering. Sit quietly until invited to introduce yourself.
05
Observe, do not compare
Every dojo has its own tempo, etiquette, and customs. Note them; do not critique them.
06
Stay for the closing bow
Even if you only watched, the closing bow is participatory. Bow with the students.
07
Send a written thank-you
Email or handwritten note within 48 hours, regardless of whether you join. This is dojo etiquette.
